Tasmania is set to become the next Silicon Valley-style technology hub if the national broadband network goes ahead, says its Premier.
He's the 43rd Premier of Tasmania and an "obsessive gadget nerd" who's "got to have all the best gadgets going around".
David Bartlett, 42, is probably Australia's geekiest Premier. South Australian Premier Mike Rann "would come a close second", he says in an interview with this website.

BlackBerry PlayBook: What's under the hood?
So, who makes the processor humming under the new BlackBerry PlayBook's hood? That important question was not answered yesterday when RIM announced the 7-inch tablet.
Yesterday, when Research In Motion co-CEO Michael Lazaridis unveiled the BlackBerry PlayBook during the opening keynote event at the DevCon developer conference, the dual-core processor was touted by Lazaridis as a marquee feature. But little else was revealed about what is probably the single most important piece of internal hard

Report: Oracle sues Micron over chip pricing
Oracle has sued Micron Technology, alleging the chipmaker overcharged Sun Microsystems for memory chips, according to a report.
Micron and other manufacturers of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) "artificially inflated" the price of chips, according to an Oracle complaint filed Friday in federal court in San Jose, Calif., Bloomberg reported.

Bartow County Schools implement Apple's iPods in 7 classrooms
Editor's note: This is the first in a series of articles on the use of new technologies in the classroom. When Lisa Bagnell sees one of her students use an iPod during class, she's likely not apt to ask the child to put the device away or take the gadget from their hands. In fact, few days go by where all of her students are not using the Apple device during class time. That is because Bagnell's fourth-grade focus class is one of seven classrooms in the Bartow County System utilizing the "iPod i
Rumor: New 11.6 inch MacBook Air on tap for this fall
Another new device rumor has popped up, this time about a replacement for the MacBook Air. Apparently, the "old" MacBook Air isn't selling too well, so Apple is looking at refreshing the line with a smaller device equipped with an 11.6" (measured diagonally) screen.A device of this size is beginning to encroach on dangerous territory, considering how Steve Jobs and company have made negative comments about "netbooks" in the past. AppleInsider conjectures that the power and premium price of a mo

Netflix, Apple, and Now Microsoft All Say Nay to Blu-ray
Apple is well-known for its opposition to Blu-ray. Steve Jobs famously described the high-def format as a "bag of hurt" when explaining why Macs would likely never come with Blu-ray drives. Instead, Apple has stuck to plain old DVD drives in most of its computer lines, with the MacBook Air packing no optical drive at all.

I Was Just Struck By Lightning
I'm going to break character for a second and tell you something about myself: I was just struck by lightning. A nearby lightning strike sent a power surge through my outlet, into my computer and up my arm.
Ouch.
I wish I could tell you that electricity arced in my eyebrows, my hair caught fire and I had to put it out by sticking my head in a toilet bowl. But it was actually pretty boring, for a lightning strike. Earlier this evening I was sitting at the desk in my bedroom, happily blogging

Review: Roku XDS adds instant replay feature and more
Rather than pay the cable company high monthly fees to add a cable box to each of the TVs in my house, I prefer to use the Roku devices that only have one single price. Tonight, Roku announced their new lineup that includes three new models to replace the existing Roku SD and Roku HD-XR models that were released last October and original Roku HD. The new lineup consists of a new Roku HD (moved from mid-range to low end and now has wireless capability), Roku XD, and Roku XDS, priced to sell at $

Nearly 50 Computers Stolen From Everett Elementary In Two Months
At Everett Elementary School, the biggest assignment next week isn't for the students who will fill the empty class seats, but for school leaders.
School principal Michelle Suarez is looking for the answer to an equation that doesn't quite add up.
Someone stole 28 Apple Macbook laptop computers from a locked room inside the school. The Lincoln Police Department estimates the total loss to be $16,800.

Is the browser war pushing us forward or holding us back?
The beta release of Internet Explorer 9 didn’t really have a major impact on my life, seeing how there is no IE for Mac users.
Fair enough. Windows users were left out of the cold when Apple streamed its iPod news event earlier this month because of the restrictions that Apple imposed - the stream would only run on Apple’s Safari browser and only Macs running the latest OS or its lineup of portable devices running iOS.
It seemed silly to be forced to watch the event on the small iPod Touch

Apple Sliced offers cheaper alternative to Apple Store
