The Weirdest Things That Get Dropped on New Years Eve [NewYearsEve]
If you thought dropping Snooki was weird, you haven't seen the rest of America. Some cities drop really weird things on New Years Eve. How weird? How about bologna, sausage, a drag queen, a bag of chips and a possum?
If you're from any of these cities, well, congratulations for surviving the weirdness around you:
• Giant Pickle - Dillsburg, Pennsylvania• Pinecone - Flagstaff, Arizona• Drag Queen - Key West, Florida• Peep candy - Bethlehem, Pennsylvania• Giant Sausage - Elmore,

Sushi Restaurant Uses Sushi Robots and Control Centers to Cut Costs [Restaurant]
Kura, a sushi chain, focuses on efficiency and turning a profit. So much so that they've eschewed traditional sushi chefs for sushi robots, a large staff of waiters for conveyor belts and restaurant managers for a control center with video link.
When Kunihiko Tanaka opened his first Kura restaurant in 1995, he used conveyor belts to cut down on labor costs. That idea wasn't new, as conveyor belts have been used since the 1950's. But as he grew more focused on efficiency, he started placing

Netflix and VUDU not hitting Boxee Box till January... as if you couldn't have guessed
According to a post that's just gone live on Boxee's blog, users of the Boxee Box won't see VUDU or Netflix content on their TVs until January. We know, the wait will be painful. According to the Boxee team, VUDU offerings should hit the platform as soon as next week, but Netflix won't be made available until the end of the month. The company claims that both services are up and running in its offices, but more time was needed to "test each application to make sure they are ready for launch."

Robbery with a Giant Stick Is Way Funnier Than It Should Be [Video]
If you were a convenience store clerk faced with a robber wielding a comically large stick as a weapon, you probably wouldn't think it was too comical. But after the fact, the security camera footage is pretty ridiculous.
So, this robber has apparently decided to use an entire tree as a weapon. But the convenience store clerk whips out a hammer, and a showdown occurs. According to TBD, the robbery occurred in Virginia and not, as we initially suspected, in a 1930s slapstick silent film.

This Gold and Wood iPhone Case Goes Perfectly With Your Smoking Jacket [Ipad]
If you want to dress your iPad up in the finest case money can buy, you needn't look much further than this: Gresso's African Blackwood, 18k gold jacket. It smells distinctly of excess.
It's the same look and feel as Gresso's $ 3,000 iPhone 4 case, and while the iPad version doesn't have a price listed yet—it goes on sale tomorrow—one would imagine the cost is commensurate with the size increase.
Then again, for the right tasteful millionaire, it could make the iPad just the accent

Archos 7 Home Tablet sees revision 2, with Android 2.1 and faster 800MHz CPU
The Archos 7 Home Tablet was something of a disappointment, and Archos has shipped bigger and better things since, but the firm isn't done with the original affordable Android slate quite yet. We've confirmed with Archos that a "v2" revision is now shipping in Europe with three things the original lacked -- an accelerometer, a relatively recent version of Android (2.1) and an 800MHz Rockchip CPU. Make no mistake, those are still budget specs, and you'll almost certainly still have to hack your

Sony files ITC complaint about LG, adds another patent infringement lawsuit to the stack
Did the world's tech giants just discover they have lawyers on retainer? That's certainly how it seems, as company after company has decided 'tis the season to target the competition with patent infringement allegations. Sony, the latest, is aiming squarely at LG, claiming that the Korean manufacturer's violating eight patents with its mobile devices -- including the LG Fathom, Xenon, Neon, Remarq, Rumor 2, Lotus Elite and VL600 LTE modem -- claiming that these devices transmit
This Stunning Leica M9 Wraps Chrome In Ostrich Leather (Yes, Ostrich) [Cameras]
How do you make the beautiful, expensive Leica M9 even more beautiful and more expensive? Why, you add sapphire glass, chrome, and the tanned hide of a brown ostrich. Why does stunning always have to come at such a price?
Specifically, you're going to have to shell out $ 12,950—about a $ 6,000 markup over the original M9—for one of these very limited edition Leicas. Although since each camera sold comes packaged with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3, you could just think of it as a $ 1

Cenabo Makes Gathering Office Lunch Orders a Breeze [Webapps]
Whether your planning an event or just ordering food for a large number of people, Cenabo is a webapp that helps facilitate this tedious task to save you some time.
You can think of Cenabo as Evite for food orders (or, preferably, some other invite system). Thimble concept translates real-world input into real-time Braille (video)
From the great tomorrowland of concept videos comes yet another potentially life-changing product: a thimble (looks more like a one-finger glove to us) that takes ambient input and relays it in via an electro-tactile grid to the wearer's finger in Braille. It gets text input from an embedded camera, like in the picture above, or pulls RSS feeds, books, or presumably any other text via a Bluetooth-paired smartphone. We are, of course, addicted to the flow of info our mobile devices feed us

IKEA's New Years Toast App Is Much Cheaper than Actual Champagne [Video]
2011 is tantalizingly close—so how will you ring it in? With bottles of expensive champagne? What are you, some kind of French aristocrat? IKEA's Skal! (toast, in Swedish) app simulates booze, clinking glasses, and introduces you to strangers.
The app works in three ways. First, select a glass. Then, watch it fill with (fake, although physically simulated!) champagne. Don't try to drink it. Even if you are very drunk already, it will still just taste like an iPhone. Next, slosh it

LG looks set to unveil mobile 3DTV at CES
We don't know much about it yet, but it's looking like we might be getting a taste of 3D on the go after all at CES. We'd hoped it would be with Nintendo's 3DS, but that report turned out to be a bust, and now LG is apparently going to pick up the slack with a new mobile digital TV that has a 3D display. We know virtually nothing about the set at this point, but we're thinking it will be glasses-free and are speculating that, after its appearance in Vegas next week, it'll never be seen in the
Google's next Android Music app leaks out, gives hints of a 3.0 UI overhaul
Remember at Google I/O this year when Google showed off "something beyond Froyo" in the music realm? The demo included an all-new music player (boy, wouldn't that be nice!), along with magical features that let you push web-purchased songs to your device, and allowed you to browse your PC's music library from your phone as if it was on the device itself. Well, none of that showed up in Gingerbread, unfortunately, but the new music player itself has just leaked out. It's super buggy, and of
Just got an iPad? The best apps, accessories, and tips
So, Santa stuffed an iPad into your stocking on Christmas (insert mythical figure / appropriate receptacle / holiday of choice), and you're wondering what to do with the thing? First of all, congratulations! The iPad can be a wonderful, loyal companion and friend, but it can also take a while to warm up to. As we always say, a device is only as good as its apps, both literally and figuratively: it'll take some time to figure out what you want to get from the iTunes Store that will flesh out

42-inch Nexus S stomps into Best Buy, terrifies shoppers and demos interactive Gingerbread UI (video)
This isn't Google TV, though we can see why you'd ask. No, this monster is merely the world's largest fully-functional Nexus S handset. Presently on display in a Best Buy store in San Carlos, California, the enormous Android is equipped with a 42-inch multitouch screen, rigged to a real Nexus S that does all the processing. There's a working camera, internet access and the whole Android 2.3 user interface to explore, though it does look a mite difficult to navigate in the video below. Did we
Nokia N900 mixed with Gingerbread, baked at 425 degrees for 16-18 minutes (video)
Running Android on the Nokia N900 has been an ongoing theme for the better part of the past year -- and with hardware designed from the ground up to be both hackable and high-end, we'd expect no less. Indeed, Android 2.3 is the latest victim of an N900 sneak attack, and impressively, core components like messaging already seem to be working -- likely thanks to the fact that hackers had already gotten pre-2.3 builds rock solid. What's even more impressive, though, is how smooth and generally
Exhaustive Investigation Details Final Moments of the Doomed Deepwater Horizon [Deepwater Horizon]
Earlier this year one of the worst oil-related disasters ever caused by man started with a deadly explosion. Now, eight months later, questions are answered. Chief among them is how a rig with so many failsafes could fail to spectacularly.
Some of those questions were answered this weekend as part of an exhaustive New York Times piece that details the critical, final moments of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig and her crew.

Nikon Patent Could Lead to DSLR Moviemaking Dream Lens [Patents]
So you got a nice new DSLR for Christmas, and it can take impressive HD video too! That said, you'll probably notice that simultaneous zooming and refocusing is less than ideal. A new Nikon lens patent aims to fix that.
While such a lens is unsurprising, given the incredible interest in DSLR filmmaking these days, it is nevertheless very welcome (should it see the light of day).
Should the lens land in prosumers' hands, they can expect an experience that will involve a single lens that can

Nikon patent app details lens with manual and electronic zoom, videographers rejoice
We reckoned it was only a matter of time, and sure enough, it seems as if the engineers at Nikon are already one step ahead of everyone else. For those who've attempted to shoot video on a conventional DSLR, they've most likely ran into one problem in particular: zooming. It's fairly difficult to manhandle a D3S under ideal circumstances, but try holding it steady while also keeping a firm grip on the zoom and focus dials. Without a camera rig, it's essentially impossible to get anything more
Why Martian sunsets are blue [Video]
This stunning video of a Martian sunset was captured by the Mars Rover Opportunity. Although most movies code the Martian color scheme as red, the sunset shines blue. Find out why.
Mars is, famously, The Red Planet. The rust in the dust on its surface gives the surface a reddish-brown appearance. It vast dry, dusty expanses call to mind Earthlike deserts, in which a red-orange sun beats down on yellow sand. As a result, when we think of a Mars sunset, most think of it as blazing red.

Sanyo Eneloop Pedal Juice battery pack preview
It's Christmas Day, which probably means that at least one toy that you received (or gave) won't be fully functional until Monday. Why? Batteries. It's an age-old problem, that "batteries not included" thing, and it's one of the reasons we've fell so in love with Sanyo's Eneloop line. Without question, the Eneloop rechargeable AA batteries are amongst the best and most reliable that money can buy, so whenever another Eneloop product pops out, it obviously catches our eye. Sanyo's branching out
A Vintage Bus Is Being Used in New York City [Video]
The NYC MTA has been using a vintage, 1950's era bus (and train) on some select routes. No, it's not because the budget deficit is that bad, instead it's a neat throwback gesture by the MTA for the holiday season.
Here's a video of the retro train in action:The fare costs the same as a modern day bus or train (no 50-year discount here!) and I think it's a cute little gesture to remind us of how things got done before. The funny thing is that some people think the vintage bus is actually

ASUS O!Play Mini player ditches the USB 3.0 but keeps the 1080p
The O!Play HD2 may be the first media device to support USB 3.0, but we're guessing that hasn't exactly inspired too many of you to run out and buy the things -- assuming you can actually find one for sale. Man Attempts to Rob Restaurant Using an iPhone [Crime]
20-year-old Jerome Taylor recently put on a mask, walked into a restaurant, and waved what appeared to be a small handgun while demanding money. The restaurant's cooks immediately grabbed their knives and prepared for a fight. Then things got weirder.
Terrified by the knife-wielding staff, Taylor suddenly "became apologetic and told the cooks he was only kidding and that he needed money for his child." He managed to flee before the police arrived, but it didn't take them long to catch up

EOps Noisezero i+ Eco earbuds get cornstartch construction, finger-friendly design (video)
Hard to say when (or if) these beauts will ever hit the market, but we've all ideas they'd move quite briskly if positioned in a nondescript kind of store that tends to sell fruit, peripherals and things heavily prefixed with "i." Designed Michael Young has teamed up with EOps to create the Noisezero i+ Eco Edition earbuds, which are constructed with cornstarch (you know, in honor of Ma Earth), equipped with an iPod / iPhone-friendly inline remote and outfitted with a unique design that

VUDU 2.0 interface is live on the PlayStation 3
Just shy of a month after it launched on the PlayStation 3, VUDU has begun delivering its newly revamped interface on the game console. It should be there once the app is opened, but just in case you're not near a Sixaxis or the (now supported) Move controller check out our gallery for an idea of what the new layout look like. Oh, and if you're getting your 1080p HDX streaming via a different box or smart TV widget then keep an eye out, the company's support page say the PS3 and LG devices
If You're Stuck In Airports This Week, Here's Where You Should Eat [Travel]
I'm sure a few of you out there are stuck in an airport right now, dreading your annual Christmas trip home. You might as well eat right before you board that plane. Esquire has you covered.
If you're lucky enough to be in an airport of one of the 10 cities Esquire explored, they've pointed out the best food each has to offer. Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport has a wonderful Lamb Tenderloin. You can get some great Tapas in NYC's JFK airport. At what other airport besides Seoul's are you

Tech Lock Down (TLD) Accessory For iPad
Well here’s a simple, yet interesting and useful iPad accessory. Introducing the Tech Lock Down for iPad, aka TLD. Some of the most simple inventions can be the best ones.
This accessory can come in handy for several different businesses. For example the Tech Lock Down would work well in hospitals, banks, hotels and doctor’s offices just to name a few. It can easily be secured to most surfaces including desks, counters and walls.

Are These iPad Paintings 'Very Remarkable' or 'Quite Bad?' [Art]
David Hockney, the English painter known for his pop art and technological experimentation, has beamed more than 300 iPad drawings to an ongoing exhibition in Paris. This act has been more controversial than you might have guessed!
"Very unremarkable... some are quite bad," writes former New York Times web design director Khoi Vinh. "Garbage" is the verdict of Choire Sicha, the Awl co-editor and former art dealer.
But as The Atlantic reminds us, Hockney has been toying with tech tools for

Visualized: Apple's finest products destroyed in the name of art
What happens when you burn an iPad? Take a sledgehammer to an iPhone 4? Leave a stack of iPod nanos on the train tracks? Shoot a iPhone 3GS with a 9MM handgun? Carve up a Magic Mouse into sushi-sized chunks? Artist (and former Apple graphics designer) Michael Tompert strove for the beautiful, horrific truth. The Worst Part of Coming Home for Christmas [Rant]
I swear to fucking God, if I come home this Christmas and find out my parents are still unplugging their computer from the wall when they want to turn it off, I will fucking snap.
Seriously, how fucking hard can it be?

Rahul Sood joins Microsoft as GM for System Experience in the Interactive Entertainment Business
Yes, it's a big old mouthful of a job title, and no, we've no idea what exactly it entails either. Rahul Sood, the originator of the Voodoo gaming PC line, has just announced he has joined up with Microsoft to perform the ill-specified role of general manager for system experience in the Interactive Entertainment division. We imagine that's an intentionally loose definition, intended to give Rahul the wide remit of influence and operation that he enjoyed with his previous employer, HP. He's

Google Translate gets Doug E. Fresh-approved Beatbox button
We still don't believe that machines (or machine translation, for that matter) will ever replace the artistry that beatbox pioneers like Doug E. Fresh, Darren Robinson (RIP), or that guy from the Police Academy movies brought to the table, but it is nice to see Google acknowledging the wonderfully percussive nature of the German language phrase "pv zk pv pv zk pv zk kz zk pv pv pv zk pv zk zk pzk pzk pvzkpkzvpvzk kkkkkk bsch".

App of the Day: Camera+ for iPhone [Video]
After getting a bit overzealous with the iPhone 4's volume buttons, Camera+, my favorite iPhone photography app, was booted from the App Store. Thankfully it's back Apple's good graces, and it's just been updated with more photo-fancifying features than ever.
What is it?
Camera+, iPhone, $ 2. Even during its brief hiatus from the world of sanctioned App Store apps, Camera+ remained my favorite all-around photography app for the iPhone. Of course, it has all the photo effects you'd

Windows Phone 7's Marketplace grows faster than Android did at launch, doesn't mean much
An analyst note released by research firm IDC yesterday points out that in the nearly two months since Windows Phone 7's retail release, the Windows Marketplace has swelled to 4,000 applications -- a number that the Android Market took five months to reach. That's impressive, no doubt, and the analyst behind the numbers notes that he "would not be surprised if Microsoft had the third largest app portfolio in the industry by the middle of next year." Now granted, hitting number three would take
T-Mobile finally getting in on the mobile 3G (or 4G) router craze next March?
Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T have all deployed MiFis (and MiFi equivalents) at this point, leaving T-Mobile as the sole US national carrier to do without a dedicated mobile router -- some sort of device you can throw in your pocket and turn on for those occasions when you need to turn a cellular data signal into a nice little pocket of WiFi. Looks like that's finally changing, though, with TmoNews leaking some shots suggesting that a device codenamed "Lil Wayne" -- yes, Lil Wayne -- will be

Best Buy offering free mobile hotspots with iPad purchase
Planning to pay Verizon an extra $ 130 for an iPad + MiFi 2200 bundle? Hold on a sec, because Best Buy's planning to give away hotspots free of charge when you purchase Apple's tablet. This advertisement, obtained by 9to5 Mac, does mention that you'll need to shackle yourself to a carrier for two years to qualify -- unlike Verizon's original arrangement -- but in exchange you get a free Verizon FiveSpot, AT&T MiFi, or perhaps most excitingly, a WiMax-capable Sprint Overdrive. DIY Tron Project Gives New, Glowing Life to Old Messenger Bags [Video]
This DIY Tron messenger bag project isn't for the faint of heart, but then again none of the really good DIY ever are. If you have the right tools and a bit of time, though, this is quite the mod.

Best Buy Drops Restocking Fees [Best Buy]
Whether it was truly due to good will toward men and women, or simply to keep that bottom line healthy, we may never know, but tonight we do know this: Those Draconian "restocking fees," once synonymous with Best Buy electronics and phone returns (15% and 10%, respectively), are no more. Effective immediately. [Consumerist]

Mysterious "Pioneer Anomaly" All But Debunked? [Pioneer]
As recently as September scientists were perplexed about a strange, unexplained acceleration affecting the Pioneer spacecraft. Measurements didn't match up. Heads were scratched. New physics were excitedly hypothesized. Let's pump the brakes a moment, though, shall we?
Seems the phenomenon is on the verge of being debunked. It's not dark matter or energy or some fantastic new realm of physics that was messing with Pioneer instruments. In fact, it might be something scientists have

BMW Uses a Commercial to Burn Their Logo into Your Eye [Video]
How does a person remember ads? BMW will tell you. BMW flashed an audience with a blinding light that included a cutout of their logo. When the audience was told to close their eyes, they still saw the letters: BMW.
The video explains that the effect it's akin to staring at the sun for too long, when you close your eyes, you can still sorta see a spot there (or go blind). BMW used that to their advantage, flashing a bright screen during their commercial that included a cutout of the

Samsung pulls Froyo update for Bell's Vibrant after reports of fried internal storage
We have no idea why Samsung's having such a hard time delivering its overdue promised Froyo upgrades worldwide for the Galaxy S series, but it's not looking any easier for them this weekend: the only Canadian Galaxy S to get upgraded so far, Bell's Vibrant, has just had its update pulled. Seems a healthy number of users attempting the upgrade using Sammy's Kies desktop software ended up with inaccessible internal storage, which sucks for a variety of obvious reasons -- and that would be the

NASA Engineers Propose Combining a Rail Gun and a Scramjet to Fire Spacecraft Into Orbit [Nasa]
NASA has been working on creating a new, cheaper method to launch spacecrafts. Their latest proposal involves train tracks, a rail gun and a scramjet. Here's what they're trying to do:
In April, President Obama urged NASA to come up with, among other things, a less expensive method than conventional rocketry for launching spacecraft. By September, the agency's engineers floated a plan that would save millions of dollars in propellant, improve astronaut safety, and allow for more frequent

Wall Street Journal says apps may violate privacy, fingers MySpace and Pandora
You might have heard how careless some third-party iPhone apps can be with your personal data, but it may not yet have hit home -- offenders can include must-have programs like MySpace and Pandora, too. The Wall Street Journal tested 101 popular apps for iPhone and Android and discovered that over half transmitted unique device identifiers (UDID) to a flock of advertisers without so much as a prompt, and that some (including Pandora) even transmitted a user's age, gender and location to better

Lasers, Fire, and a Balloon Go Just As Great Together As You Think [Video]
Hype is a dangerous thing. I'm almost scared to see Tron: Legacy! But fortunately for all of us, this video titled "Laser + Balloon + Fire Inside It = Awesome!" delivers. Bless their hearts, they even threw in some slow-motion.
What's exactly is going on here? Well, you've got your pocket laser, pointed squarely at a couple of bits of flash paper that are inside an inflated balloon. Then, uh... boom! You don't need any more than that on a Friday, do you? [Laughing Squid]

According to Trumbull, the footage is in perfect condition, but he doesn't know what Warner wants to do with it. These are the scenes that were left out of the final version, according to IMDB:

Everyone's Favorite Windows Error is Now Artwork [Windows]
500 prints of the Windows XP wallpaper "Green Hill" have been turned into a piece of art, called "My Favourite Landscape." Yes, the world's most infuriating computer error can now be cooed at in an art gallery. Ugh.
Paul Destieu, the creator of such horror, used 500 prints which "sets the common bug out of its context, on a wall, expending it to much bigger scale. The famous picture finds a new landscape shape out of its usual frame."

Google Fiber's 1Gbps ISP 'test community' selection delayed until 2011
As you can imagine, the call for a community to be the recipient of Google Fiber's 1Gbps network was met by an overwhelming response. Indeed, the response was so great that while the recipient of all that bandwidth was to be announced at the end of this year, it looks like they won't have a decision until early 2011. In the meantime, the project will continue to offer insanely high download speeds to Google's campus and an 850 home beta network in Stanford.Google Fiber's 1Gbps ISP 'test

Vampire Microbe Loves Human Blood [Science]
Friends, this is Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus aureus, here are some victims. You probably already knew each other. After all, the bacteria—origin of the MRSA superbug—lives in the nasal cavity of one third of all humans. Now scientists know why.
They like human blood above all other kinds of animal blood. Scientists have found that the bacteria prefer human hemoglobin, which is responsible of carrying oxygen through vertebrates. These microbes attach to this protein to suck its

Iconic Stand for your iPhone can put any logo to good, unauthorized use
Iconic Stand is seemingly still a concept, but an interesting one for sure. Korean-designed iPhone stands, they're made of birch and have a serious natural feel to them. The makers have seen fit to design the stands with various famous logos for properties such as Twitter, Facebook, and Blogger built right into them. And while a nice little iPhone stand (which will apparently hold your phone whether it's nude or Bumper-wearing) with an iconic logo on it sounds pretty neat to us, we can't
Gesture-controlled robot arm enables civilization's most meta high five
This video, criminally, doesn't actually show any high fives, but we're sure the students at the University of Tsukuba have sustained endless LOLs over the past few months, pushing their gesture-driven robot arm system to the limits of human-robot high five interaction. The system itself is relatively simple: it uses two cameras to track a hand's movements, including specific finger gestures, which are then processed and translated into robotic movement in real time. The end result is

We've discussed the printer ink cartridge bombs used by a group of terrorists about a month ago and we've pondered just how evildoers hide their bombs, but now we're discovering exactly how terrifyingly well those explosives avoid detection.
Ever since al-Qaeda's Yemen branch snuck two bomb-packed printers onto cargo aircraft in October, it's been widely suspected that the bombs were chosen to evade airport detection capabilities. And yesterday, a senior Department of Homeland Security

Why Is Nearly Every Yahoo Search Showing Porn? [Broken]
Uh oh! Something very odd and naughty is going on over at Yahoo right now. Any searches which result in thumbnails will wind up showing you an unrelated and rather pornographic image.
To see what happens for yourself, all you have to do is this:
Head over to the Yahoo search page
Search for something which will produce image thumbnails in the results (such as "kitten photos" or "iphone 4 images")
Click on the first (and seemingly normal) thumbnail in the results

US Army Connecting Soldiers to Digital Applications program putting smartphones in soldiers' hands this February
Earlier this year, DARPA put out RFIs with an eye on developing military apps and an app store for iOS and Android, and now the US Army's Connecting Soldiers to Digital Applications (CSDA) program will put handsets, network equipment, and other equipment including tablets, e-readers, and pico projectors into the hands of the First Army Brigade this February. Additionally, the Army plans to start issuing Common Access Card (the ID cards used to log on to DoD computers and networks) readers for
Google under fire for promoting own content ahead of competing websites
This isn't exactly a new allegation, but the idea's spreading fast: Google is tuning search results to favor itself, and perhaps that's not entirely fair. Though the European Union's already investigating Google for potential antitrust violations, a recent article in the Wall Street Journal cites several US businesses that aren't too happy themselves, claiming that Google Places, Product Search and the like took a big chomp out of their traffic. Google's defense, as usual, rests on its secret
Nexus S in stock on Carphone Warehouse's site a little early
So this is how it was supposed to go: Best Buy would start selling the Nexus S in the States on December 16th, and Carphone Warehouse would follow on a few days later -- the 20th, to be exact -- in the UK. Looks like the British are going rogue here, though, because Samsung's Gingerbread-packed slate is showing "in stock" on Carphone Warehouse's site right this very moment, which should theoretically mean it ships the same day if you order it before 5PM local time. A Drop of Water at 10,000 Frames Per Second Is a Bouncy Wonder [Video]
When you watch a water droplet make impact on water in super slow motion, the result is more like a trampoline than a reservoir. And it's positively mesmerizing.
The bouncing—which scientists call the coalescence cascade, because that sounds fancier than "bouncing"—happens too quickly to be noticed by the human eye. But viewed at 10,000 frames per second, you can clearly see the droplet deposit half of itself into the pool it hits, then bounce up, then repeat until it's gone. [Best of

Kingston's DataTraveler Mini Fun USB flash drives: they're small and thrilling
Tired of lugging around that boring flash drive? Kingston feels your pain, and it's hoping to add a fair amount of "pizazz" and "spice" to your mobile storage needs. One look at the new DataTraveler Mini Fun G2 all but confirms that there's oodles of joviality brimming beneath the colorful plastic, with a trio of hues to choose from (based on model). These guys can also be connected together for kicks and giggles, with 2B, 4GB and 8GB models available to bring smiles to the faces of those you
Dell 'Fractal' workstation designs revealed
Look, we don't normally get too stoked over workstations, they remind us too much of "work." Also, "stations." Still, a chance to see some unreleased workstations from Dell? That actually look pretty sweet? Sure, we'll go in on that. A tipster found these "Fractal design language" renders just floating helplessly around the internet and forwarded them over. They presumably relate to the upcoming Precision T7600, T5600, and T3600 lines (refreshes for the T7500, T5500, and T3600, respectively).
Afghanistan moves ahead with plans for national electronic ID cards
It doesn't appear to involve the biometric IDs that were first proposed by NATO, but the Afghanistan government has just announced plans to issue electronic ID cards to everyone in the country -- an undertaking that it hopes will be complete in five years. That admittedly difficult effort got off to an official start today with the signing of a $ 101.5 million contract with Afghan company Grand Technology Resources, which will apparently be responsible for producing the wallet-sized cards

Latest Kinect Hack Gives More False Hope to Air Guitar Enthusiasts Everywhere [Video]
Microsoft Kinect has more than proven itself to be this year's eminently hackable peripheral—all the cool kids are doing it! This air guitar hack? Continues the trend quite admirably. Here's to the inevitably face-melting air guitar game coming soon.
Designed by Chris O'Shea, the Air Guitar Prototype certainly won't replace a real guitar anytime soon, but as it was with those plastic kit rhythm games, the arcade-y potential of this kind of hack is undeniable.

CE-Oh no he didn't!: GM's Dan Akerson says he 'wouldn't be caught dead in a Prius'
Think GM's CEO sees the Toyota Prius as a worthy competitor that, in many ways, paved the the way for the Chevy Volt? Think again. Speaking to the Economic Club of Washington, D.C. this week, GM CEO Dan Akerson described Toyota's hybrid as a "geek-mobile," and flatly declared that he "wouldn't be caught dead in a Prius." Not surprisingly, it didn't long for Toyota to respond to that slam, with a company spokesman telling The New York Times that "Toyota has sold more than two million Prius

Sphero toy ball rolls itself, you control it with your smartphone
Don't have the airspace required for an AR.Drone? Gearing up for its CES 2011 debut, Sphero is a small, robotic toy ball made by Orbotix, and controlled remotely via Bluetooth and your smartphone's tilt sensor. A ball that moves by itself? Call us lazy (too lazy to roll a ball even), but we think this is a toy whose time has come. Sure, the whole thing is pretty straightforward, although we hope that once iPhone and Android developers get ahold of that open API we'll see plenty in the way of
Motorola's 10-inch Honeycomb tablet meets Mr. Blurrycam, shows off Verizon logo
By now you're probably familiar with this slate, seeing as how Google's Andy Rubin recently unveiled it on stage, but we're willing to bet you've never seen the top edge -- you know, the part now bearing a front-facing webcam and a conspicuous Verizon tattoo. Yes, this is Motorola's 10-inch Honeycomb tablet, and it's playing for Team Red just as foretold, though the tipster who obtained these images isn't sure whether it will bear the name Stingray, Everest or even potentially "Trygon."

Could Stonehenge Have Been Built With Balls? [History]
Stonehenge. How the heck was it built? The latest theory, from a student, says since the Stone Age men didn't have the wheel, they could have built rails with wooden balls inside to transport the massive stone pieces.
Andrew Young, the student behind the new theory, started cooking up the idea when he saw carved stone balls near Neolithic stone circles. He said:
"I measured and weighed a number of these stone balls and realized that they are all precisely the same size-around 70

It Costs $82,000 to Light the One Million Christmas Lights at this House [ChristmasLights]
The Faucher Family in Delaware have built extravagant Christmas lights setups for 25 years now. How extravagant? They use 1,000,000 lights. So how much does it cost them to run the lights for a month? $ 82,320. Gulp.
HouseLogic estimated the total cost by using the average price per kWh in the Faucher Family's region and assumed each of their 1,000,000 bulbs were the average 5 watt C7 bulb. They then figured the lights to run for 4 hours each night and 30 nights in total. The estimated

How Would NASA Rescue An Astronaut Who Floated Away? [Space]
What would happen if an astronaut started floating away from the International Space Station? How would NASA rescue them? Here's what they would do.
It's never happened, and NASA feels confident that it never will. For one thing, astronauts generally don't float free. Outside the ISS, they're always attached to the spacecraft with a braided steel tether, which has a tensile strength of 1,100 pounds. If it's a two-person spacewalk, oftentimes the astronauts are also hooked to each

Real Racing 2 coming to iOS December 16th
After a few weeks of teasing and hints, Firemint has finally revealed all about its upcoming Real Racing 2 game for iOS, and it looks extremely impressive. The first game in the series is still one of the most popular and well done racing games in the App Store, and Firemint is upping the ante high for the second go-round. Real Racing 2 will feature 30 licensed cars from brands like Ford, Jaguar, Volkswagen and McLaren, and will pit those vehicles against each other in a 16-car grid both

Mac App Store has software developers optimistic
With the Mac App Store set to launch in January 2011, software developers are excited about the prospect of the success of Apple's mobile App Store crossing over to the desktop market. While most OS X software will need to be rewritten in order to work within the confines of the new store, companies are interested in seeing how well their products can do in front of a larger audience, even if a lower price point is needed for those customers used to buying less expensive apps online. First Look: Google’s Netbook Has Its Head in the Cloud
Google’s Cr-48 netbook is a promising but incomplete step towards a life lived fully on the internet.

Here are our first impressions after a few hours using the machine. A full review will follow.

Woz Bought An iPhone 4 From That Ballsy Chinese Teen [WhiteIphone4]
Our favorite Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder, has a white iPhone 4. Surprisingly, he didn't use his Apple connections to get one though. CNN says Woz got it from that ballsy Chinese teen who sold white iPhones.

The Noun Project: public domain pictograms for designers, the illiterate
OK, this might not be much to look at -- a page full of Dingbats, essentially -- but the premise behind the Noun Project is sound and, in this increasingly complex world, important: by creating a visual collection of downloadable public domain symbols representing things like escalators, fast food, and customs checkpoints, the website hopes to promote a visual language "that can be understood by all cultures and people." And since we're sticklers for good, clean design, projects like this are

What You Need to Know About Google Chrome OS
Google is aiming to put the “net” in netbook with Chrome OS, a lightweight operating system that focuses on web apps and online storage.
Due for release in mid-2011, the first batch of Chrome OS netbooks will come with Intel processors and Verizon data plans. They’ll download apps through a Google app store hosted on the web. Google detailed plans of Chrome OS in a press event Tuesday.

iPhone Auto correct fail [Humor]
I don’t know about you but I have this love/hate relationship with my iPhone’s auto correct. I can’t spell (don’t tell Rene!) so I can’t really live without it, but that means I end up having auto correct change my words, sometimes into something horrific. In a series of recently published editorials, the newspaper takes issue with Apple banning the Ekstra Bladet iPhone and iPad app because of their Page 9 Girl, a nude photograph of a woman they have been publishing for 34 years. Norman Foster to design Apple’s new campus called ‘Apple City’
December 5, 2010 at 8:31 am

El Economicnista reports (English)that renowned British architect Norman Foster is hard at work designing Apple’s new campus in Cupertino. The 100 acre campus was picked up from HP last month for a measly $ 300M.
The architect has some pretty incredible plans, including an underground tunnel system linking the two campuses (called it). In fact, the entire road transportation system will operate through a network of tunnels (tubes?)

Typically, the onus is on a beefy controller to take care of your drive and make sure it lasts a good long while (which is why brand names like SandForce can make or break an SSD) but it looks like Micron is planning to usurp some of that responsibility with its new ClearNAND chips. Simply put, each ClearNAND memory module has

Photos Without a Camera? It's Possible (And Amazing) [Photography]
Your DSLR might be great, but fancy image sensors aren't the only way to capture a spectacular image. A host of artists are producing great photography without hitting a single button. Their secret? Chemicals. Powerful chemicals. And serious talent.
The trick behind the cam-less captures is actually pretty simple—photographic paper is coated with silver salts, which cast an image onto the light-sensitive surface. But that's just the start. Each artist has his or her own variations, some

Street View Shocker! Google pays Boring couple $1 for trespassing
It's hardly a surprise that there's a cadre of individuals who aren't too fond of Google's seemingly omnipresent Street View fleet, but the ending of this dispute is downright absurd. Back in 2008, Aaron and Christine Boring were looking for a little excitement, and decided to find it in a courtroom; the duo sued Google for trespassing on their property while collecting photographs for Street View. According to them, Google's Street View car ignored the "No Trespassing" sign planted out front,
An Actual Steam-Powered Steampunk Record Player Looks Beautiful But Sounds Horrible [Video]
This beautiful steampunk record player is pretty clever: it's actually powered by a steam engine. One problem though? That steam engine makes it sound horrible. Here's what it sounds like:
Here's what the DIY-er has to say:
Yes, it's a steam powered record player. Playing a punk LP. The Sex Pistols – God save the Queen (Victoria obviously). You can't really get more steam, or punk, than that! And yes, I know it sounds terrible.
At least he knows it! The project started when he decided

iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS $50 off at Radio Shack
Radio Shack is offering $ 50 in savings on the purchase of a new iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS at their retail locations (i.e. offline only) until December 11. Better yet, if you have a good condition iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G you want to trade in, they’ll give you another $ 75 or $ 125 off respectively. Darren Murph of Engadget does the math on that:
you could walk in today, hand over your 3GS, and walk out with an iPhone 4 for $ 25 (plus activation fees)

Speech bubble-shaped Speak-er now on sale, we take a listen
Even for a renowned outlet like Art Lebedev Studios, it's hard to get quirky, design-centric products out in a commercialized, race-to-the-bottom world. Far too often, dreams die at the production line, and some of the best designed gear in the world stalls on the drawing board. Somehow or another, Sherwood Forlee and Mihoko Ouchi have managed to overcome the traditional production limitations and bring this particular fantasy to life. If you'll recall, we heard about The.'s Speak-er back in

Sony Ericsson's Zeus Z1 PlayStation phone contributes sample shots to Picasa
At this point, does it really surprise anyone that a new phone is leaking by way of a photo sharing site? We totally understand the conundrum: when you're logged into a phone that you're testing and you're taking pictures, it's so easy to upload 'em. And hey, you need to test the sharing functionality at some point anyway, right? At any rate, we love it, so we're not going to complain that a few photos with Sony Ericsson Zeus clearly called out in the EXIF data have started showing up on
Review: ZAGGMate iPad keyboard case
December 3, 2010 at 5:53 pm
Many iPad keyboard cases have hit the market in recent weeks and we finally got our hands on ZAGG’s ZAGGMate iPad keyboard case for review and it’s awesome. The ZAGGMate is an iPad keyboard accessory at heart but doubles as a case. The case aspect of the ZAGGMate is not fantastic but the keyboard part may just be the best third-party implementation we’ve seen. Check out our review after the break:

Motorola planning 4G devices for Verizon, 7- and 10-inch tablets early next year
It looks like this CES could be a hot one for Motorola. Can you believe it was only a bit more than a year ago that Motorola introduced the Droid? Now it has a whole lineup of incredibly hot phones, and CES seems like a perfect time for the beating of chests in front of an industry. Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha just went on record during a keynote at the Credit Suisse 2010 Technology Conference, saying Motorola will be entering the tablet space 'in the near future.' He also said that he sees both

iFlash adds a flash to your iPhone or iPod touch
Of course, it kind of takes away from the idea that a mobile phone should be sleek and easy to carry, but I'm guessing that is beside the point. The iFlash is a self-powered flash module that plugs directly into the docking port of your iPhone 3G/3GS or iPod touch and allows owners to take pictures in badly lit areas. It will also work with your iPhone 4 but there's not a lot of point in having two flashes, especially since the extra one hangs off your otherwise thin and lightweight iPhone. As
Incipio underGround Case for iPad – accessory review
If you’re looking for a sleeve case for your iPad, the Incipio underGround Case may be for you. It’s envelope design gives it an urban feel while offering protection for your precious iPad.
The outside is made from a wool/felt textured material and feels great in your hands. The micro-suede inside gives your iPad a scratch-free environment. The sleeve provides a snug fit, so pairing it with another case is likely impossible.
There isn’t much else to say about Incipio underGround case

Apple opens up new business with POS systems
December 1, 2010 at 3:42 pm
Late last year there were rumors that Apple would release their EasyPay point-of-sale system as a commercial product to third parties. Last month Apple’s first customer, Gap Inc’s Old Navy subsidiary began piloting them. We’re told there is one per store and they are kept in a safe when not in use.
The two Bay Area companies have had strong ties at the top with Gap’s former CEO Millard Drexler sitting on Apple’s Board since 1999 and Steve Jobs

New 'iPad Is Amazing' ad touts iOS 4.2 features
Apple's latest iPad commercial, "iPad Is Amazing", is touting iOS 4.2's new features including AirPrint, AirPlay, multitasking, and folders. Seemingly trying to reign in some of those holiday shoppers, this new ad definitely offers up something for everyone in the family.
Just for the record, I will admit that bought an iPad when they were first announced. I will also admit that I returned it one week later, as I didn't feel that it did anything that my MacBook and iPhone couldn't already do

Motorola Mobility's mystery gadget streams video to tablets and phones
Wonder why Motorola's set-top-box business got bundled in with the phones? If we had to guess, it's probably because Motorola Mobility is making a device that will wirelessly join both. Speaking at the Reuters Global Media Summit, company president Daniel Moloney said that Motorola's working on a standalone device that will wirelessly sling video to tablets and phones in the home, and will later be integrated directly into new set-top-boxes the company rolls out. "It's one consumer proposition
