People Start Piling on Top of Each Other As an Escalator Goes Crazy [Video]
Casey Chan — This is crazy. During John Stewart and Steven Colbert's 'Rally to Restore Sanity' event in Washington DC, an escalator in a Metro station went completely buckwild. Like to the shits. I'm not kidding, the escalator started speeding up and tossing people on top of each other. Just watch. The ridiculousness starts around 30 seconds in.
Apparently, this happened because the escalator's brakes failed. I'm taking the stairs from now on.

A Scientist Was Killed By a Non-Killing Strain of the Plague [Science]
Casey Chan — 18 months ago, Malcolm Casadaban, a University of Chicago professor of genetics and cell biology, was working on research regarding the Plague. Yeah, that Plague. But the Plague bacteria he was testing was genetically modified, specifically weakened so that it couldn't infect humans. And yet, with sadness, Casadaban somehow got infected and died just a few hours after being rushed to the hospital.

Mac OS X Lion hands-on preview
Apple announced Mac OS X Lion with considerable fanfare at its Back to the Mac event last October, and now it's dropped the first developer preview on the world -- giving us a chance to sample some of the big cat's new features and UI concepts. We installed the dev build on one of our MacBook Pros and used it over the weekend, and while we won't be able to see any huge changes in day-to-day workflow until our favorite apps are updated to take advantage of Lion, we did see plenty of interesting

AdvanceTC's 4.8-inch tabletphone runs Windows 7 on a 1.6GHz Atom CPU
It may not sound like the most practical combination, but we've got to hand it to AdvanceTC -- it's shoehorned telephony into a Windows 7 tablet, fulfilling our dark desire for a spiritual successor to the xpPhone. Yes, that's not Windows Phone 7 you're looking at above, but rather full desktop Windows running on a sizable quad-band GSM brick, whose insides hold a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD, a 4.8-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, a 1.3 megapixel webcam and a chunky 3200mAh
Biodegradable SunChip Bag Returns with Quieter, Ear-Friendlier Packaging [Packaging]
Jack Loftus — Do you remember the hilariously loud biodegradable SunChips bag? I said, DO YOU REMEMBER—ahem, sorry. The bag, you see, it was rather loud, so Frito-Lay discontinued it. But now it's back and quieter than ever!
The secret is a tiny layer of rubber adhesive between the outer and inner packaging. According to Frito-Lay engineers, the packaging now gives off noise at about 70 decibels, or about the same as a normal bag of chips.
The bags are available now. Snackers, let us

Inhabitat's Week in Green: SunPower supplants Ford, lava power, and the airlifted eco shelter
Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.
This week Inhabitat saw geothermal power projects pick up steam around the world as Iceland eyed liquid magma as an energy source and the UK sought to tap geothermal reserves under Newcastle. Twilight Discovery [Image Cache]
Jack Loftus — Yesterday, ISS denizen Paolo Nespoli snapped this photo of the space shuttle Discovery on approach to the station.
Notice the shadow? The shuttles aren't usually cast in shadow, given their high orbit, but in this rare instance everything lined up and the ISS managed to block out a bit of the Sun. Seemed like kind of a fitting photo for Discovery, which is docked with the ISS for the last time.
Cast in shadow; twilight of its career—that sort of thing.
Fun fact: Nespoli

Provided you have a blazing fast internet connection and both Flash and Java installed, four streaming game demos are a just a click (and possibly a survey, or a short wait) away, including three EA titles (Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2, The Sims 3) and Second Life. Nintendo 3DS launches in Japan, populace tears through initial 400,000 unit shipment
You won't be able to snap one up at your local GameStop for a full month, but the Nintendo 3DS had a solid launch in Japan today, reportedly liquidating nearly its entire initial shipment of 400,000 spiffy stereoscopic gaming handhelds by the end of the day. Some of those sales were to customers waiting in a few lines up to 2,000 persons long, but those lines were exceptions to the norm -- several publications note that very few stores actually had any lines to speak of, as most Japanese

Researchers debut one-cubic-millimeter computer, want to stick it in your eye
This as-of-yet-unnamed mini computer was fashioned as an implantable eye pressure monitor for glaucoma patients, but its creators envision a future where we're all crawling with the little buggers. Taking up just over one cubic millimeter of space, the thing stuffs a pressure sensor, memory, thin-film battery, solar cell, wireless radio, and low-power microprocessor all into one very small translucent container. The processor behind this little guy uses an "extreme" sleep mode to keep it

Visual VoiceMail pulled from Android Market, Google accused of 'pulling an Apple'
Looks like Apple isn't the only one wanting to make sure that app payments are being run through appropriate channels. The Visual VoiceMail app, which has been downloaded about a million times (literally), has just been pulled from the Android Market. When developers at PhoneFusion asked the reasonable question, "why," they were simply directed to section 3.3 of the Android Market Developer Distribution Agreement:

Sprint HTC Arrive with Windows Phone 7 copy and paste first hands-on!
HTC also brought along a Sprint-branded Arrive to our San Francisco reader meetup, and while we're already familiar with this Windows Phone 7 slider from our time with the HTC 7 Pro it's still nice to see a CDMA WP7 device in the flesh. Oh, and the keyboard is pretty fantastic -- not only does it feel great, but the dedicated number row alone is reason for keyboard fans to give this thing a look. The best part? The demo unit was loaded up with the Windows Phone 7 copy and paste update, which

Intel Oak Trail Atom Z670 tablets to arrive at the end of March
Intel's spent the last nine months prepping its Oak Trail silicon to improve the battery life and performance of Windows 7 tablets, and come the end of next month we should finally have some slates with the new 1.5GHz Atom Z670 chip inside. Sources: iPad 2 lands in thinner body with spec bump and cameras, SD slot and higher resolution display are out
The Apple rumors game can be a volatile thing. Just as we'd heard about last minute alterations to the Apple TV before it hit the market, we've gotten word from sources that the iPad 2 slated to be announced next Wednesday will be sans a few of the features we'd previously reported. Notably, that SD card slot and higher resolution display won't make it into the new model (the latter we'd been hearing rumblings about for a little while). What's the cause of the switch? Well our sources weren't
HTC Incredible S shipping this week in UK, will come with Froyo to start
Though it'd originally been pegged for the second quarter, it seems HTC's bumping that up a smidge with the launch of its new flagship -- the Incredible S -- in the UK this week. Pre-orders are going on as we speak with shipments promised for tomorrow, but there's a catch: rather than shipping with Gingerbread, the phones will come with Froyo to start with an upgrade to Gingerbread promised for the near future. Buyers, we've got a little homework for you: if you're feeling adventurous and in a

Motorola Xoom review
As we put rubber to road on our Motorola Xoom review, it's important to note that it was only a matter of time before the Android army delivered a proper iPad competitor. Moto's partnership with Google (and use of the 3.0 version of its mobile operating system, Honeycomb), has made that assumed inevitability a very serious reality. There can be little question that the Xoom is certainly a contender for the hearts and minds of potential tablet buyers in the market. Besides boasting that fancy

Activision and Sega show off Wappy Dog dogbot / Nintendo DS game at Toy Fair 2011
Toy Fair 2011 isn't quite as big a deal as say, CES or MWC, but it still has its fair share of nifty plaything gadgets. Then you can presumably snoop and poke around as much as you want. He claims that the software is very easy to install and that "your children don't know it's there." I think he's crazy.

Kayaker Takes "Best Ever" Shot of English Sea Monster Using Cellphone [Wtf]
Jack Loftus — Cellphone cameras are everywhere. Kids, adults—all armed to the teeth with capable cameras. With so many in so many hands, it's no surprise that a kayaker just captured the best photo ever of an infamous English sea monster using—you see where I'm going with this, yes?—his cellphone.
The kayaker was Tom Pickles, and IT guy on retreat with his company, CapGemini. The lake, Lake Windermere. The creature was the English version of Nessie, called Bownessie, and not the

Why Nobody Can Match the iPad’s Price [Apple]
— When Steve Jobs introduced the iPad last January, the biggest surprise wasn't the actual product. (Many shrugged and called the iPad a "bigger iPhone.") It was the price: Just $ 500.
Nobody expected that number, perhaps because Apple has traditionally aimed at the high end of the mobile computer market with MacBooks marked $ 1,000 and up. And perhaps we were also thrown off because Apple execs repeatedly told investors they couldn't produce a $ 500 computer that wasn't a piece of

Developer gets Kinect working on Android, rains on Microsoft's WP7 parade (video)
Windows Phone 7 is getting a lot of extensions this year and, while we wouldn't say Kinect interoperability is anywhere near as important as third-party multitasking, it could be fun. Still, we haven't seen proper Kinect interop, the sort that would see you controlling WP7 games with a Kinect -- the sort that is apparently possible on Android. YouTuber HirotakaSter has managed to hook a Kinect up to Android hardware, what looks to be an Armadillo 500 FX development platform, and get everything

VoIP alleges Google entered a license agreement with one of its subsidiaries in 2005 for technology that allows users to click online ads to call the advertiser directly over the internet -- because, you

HP revamping webOS App Catalog for tablet use, adding carrier billing and magazine-like view
If HP wants webOS to be a competitive mobile ecosystem, the platform's app store has an awful lot of catching up to do -- but in terms of raw features, it sounds like the company plans to get with the program soon. PreCentral attended a developer presentation at MWC 2011 where HP showed off a brand new version of the App Catalog specifically designed for the tablet-friendly webOS 3.0, and found it will come with a handful of features that should make it eminently more useful. The in-dash tape deck is dead, mixtape memories will live forever
The rattling of naked cassettes in the glove box. The crunching of plastic cases in the footwell. That satisfying clunk when a tape got pulled down into the dash. Will iPad 3 Arrive In 2011
It’s incredible how fast new technology becomes outdated and obsolete these days. The iPad 2 hasn’t even gone on sale yet and there’s already rumors about iPad 3 making it’s debut sometime during the fall, around September to be exact.
There’s no confirmation on whether or not these rumors are true. However, Apple must be feeling more pressure as the tablet computer industry becomes rapidly more competitive so it’s really not that far fetched for something like this to

LG Optimus 3D has dual-core 1GHz OMAP 4 CPU, video codecs up the wazoo
LG's been mighty stingy with details about its 3D smartphone, but some very promising ones have just trickled out of Barcelona ahead of Mobile World Congress -- in keeping with the companies theme of doubling everything, the LG Optimus 3D will ship with a dual-core 1GHz TI OMAP 4 chip. HP donates server to WebOS Internals, makes homebrew its boo
Palm's always been pretty cozy with the homebrew community, and now, with a donation to WebOS Internals, HP's showing that they've got love for hackers, too. Just in time for the lover's holiday, HP announced plans to donate a ProLiant DL385 server to the independent developer's resource -- a gift worth $ 10,000 and packing 32GB of RAM and 8TB disk space. Considering all the new devices we saw at the webOS event this week, the added capacity comes at just the right time. We always thought

HP Veer too small for 3.5mm headphone jack and microUSB port, gets magnetic connectors instead
Ah, fiddlesticks! It was bound to happen sooner or later with phones becoming increasingly anorexic, but we can't say that HP's solution to not having room for a 3.5mm headphone jack or a microUSB port is... um, awesome. Just as consumers had their voices heard when HTC decided to require an ExtUSB adapter to use standard headphones with the T-Mobile G1, we're guessing that quite a few potential Veer buyers will be soured by the idea of carrying around yet another dongle just to have access to

Samsung dubs its mobile processors Exynos, dual-core 4210 (formerly Orion) arriving next month
We've been talking about Samsung's Orion processor for some time, the dual-core successor to the well-received Hummingbird core of 2010 -- but Orion was a codename all along. What will you be calling these two slices of high-performance silicon by the time they finally grace a phone of yours? "Exynos 4210," it turns out, as the Orion becomes the first member of Sammy's newly-branded Exynos line of application processors. We'd already known that the company was targeting the first half of 2011

ZTE 005Z emergency cellphone keeps your kid safe, cooler than other kids
Remember back in 2005 when kiddy phones were all the rage? Well, with the release of the single-button 005Z, Softbank and ZTE are giving toddler connectivity another try. Like the Firefly and the Migo before it, this little guy limits outbound calls, but unlike its predecessors, the 005Z only allows for one pre-programmed number -- so if baby's in danger, mommy better have her cellphone charged. While the one-button approach is limited, the phone also acts as an alert system: when the cord is

Activision kills Guitar Hero division to the consternation of fake musicians everywhere
Guitar Hero had its time in the sun as one of the most successful franchises in musical gaming. Still, it's been no secret that the once-respected brand, owned by Activision, has experienced pretty steep declines in the past few years, especially on the lackluster Guitar Hero 5. So, surprising or not, the announcement today that Activision would disband the Guitar Hero team and kill off development of the next title in the series is a sad bit of news to hear (though in fact, not as sad as

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop rallies troops in brutally honest 'burning platform' memo?
"The first iPhone shipped in 2007, and we still don't have a product that is close to their experience. Android came on the scene just over 2 years ago, and this week they took our leadership position in smartphone volumes. Unbelievable." This is just one of many, many pieces of stark knowledge allegedly dropped by recently-appointed Nokia CEO Stephen Elop -- formerly of Microsoft -- in a roughly 1,300-word memo to the company's employees that we've received today. Though we can't vouch for

Interactive storefront displays show up at Canadian Starbucks, window licking discouraged
Starbucks has given the caffeinated crowd a new reason, other than the free WiFi, to stop by a couple of locations in Toronto and Vancouver -- interactive window displays! Taking sidewalk passers-by on a journey to assemble their favorite Tazo teas, the interactivity comes via a vinyl screen, projector, and gesture controls. We've already seen an interactive storefront in the US, so its about time our friends up north got some geekified advertising of their own. Vid's after the break.Continue

Sprint's Kyocera Echo dual-screen Android phone announced, we go hands-on
Sprint promised us an "industry first" at its event today, and it certainly delivered: check out the Kyocera Echo, the first dual-screen Android phone. The screens are connected by a slick sliding liquid-metal hinge that Kyocera's filed several patents on -- the phone can be closed and used like a regular single-screen phone, unfolded all the way, or

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Lifts Off February 13 [Video]
That strangely off-putting Android ad with the human thumbs was trying to tell us something after all, people. Mainly, that the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play phone is arriving soon. Soon, as in February 13th.
OK, so maybe it's actually the company's Facebook page that told me this. But the ad ran again this evening during the Super Bowl so, uh, watch it again and don't puke:

Motorola's Xoom Super Bowl commercial tips hat to Apple's '1984' spot (video)
We saw it teased right around 48 hours ago, and now Motorola's full Xoom Super Bowl ad is out and about for the world to see. It aired just moments ago during Super Bowl XLV, and it's fairly obvious where it took inspiration. It's easily one of the best tech spots we've seen in quite some while, and as much as Motorola has been hyping its Honeycomb-based superslate, we'd say it better sell quite a few to recoup what it's already lost in marketing -- even at $ 800 a pop, it'll still take a

How would you change Logitech's Revue with Google TV?
Remember Google TV? It's still kickin', but El Goog still has quite a few content distribution quibbles to solve before it can be taken seriously -- at least in our estimation. Logitech was one of the first outfits to buy into Google's scheme to take over the television, with the Revue first out of the gate to provide Google TV access to existing sets. We had our fair share of gripes with the box, and while it definitely enabled quite the unusual videocall in a prior episode of The Engadget

HTC's flagship Android spotted again with 2.2.1 OS and unibody design
Oh boy, looks like HTC's having some real trouble with leaks in its home town lately. Spotted again in Taiwan is this Android device that looks awfully familiar, and for the first time, we get to see a clear shot of its somewhat homely backside. The lucky phonespotter claims that this unibody phone -- codenamed Saga and running 2.2.1 -- belongs to a "client" of his, and from his brief hands-on he reckons it's about as thick as the 7 Mozart and the Legend. Well, that's pretty much all we've
3DTV shocker! Toshiba's first glasses-free TVs selling slowly in Japan
In truly surprising news, it appears that a combination of high prices, small sizes and a somewhat questionable viewing experience have caused Toshiba's new GL1 line of glasses-free 3DTVs to sell more slowly than the company expected. In their first month of availability the 20-inch set, priced at 240,000 yen ($ 2,940), sold around 500 units while its 12-inch cousin sold even less than that, despite projections both would sell at least 1,000 units. Don't think Toshiba's letting its hard work

No, Hackers Can’t Open Hoover Dam's Floodgates and Kill Thousands [Reality Check]
While discussing legislative measures concerning cyberterrorism, several legislative aides on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee said that we need to protect ourselves from hackers who could open Hoover Dam and kill thousands. But is that scenario even possible?
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is shooting down a key legislative talking point: that the internet "kill-switch" legislation is needed to prevent cyberterrorists from opening the Hoover Dam's floodgates.

Facebook Now Responsible for 25% of Hooker Hookups [Sex]
There was once a time when you actually had to leave your home to get a prostitute. And what a long, seedy walk to the docks or brothel or alley behind Denny's it was. Now? Facebook does it for you!
According to Columbia University sociology professor Sudhir Venkatesh, of the 290 New York City prostitutes he tracked, a full quarter were using Facebook to solicit clients. And that was three years ago—I have a feeling it's only ballooned since then (especially with the improved messaging

T-Mobile's upcoming HSPA+ WWAN offerings get leaked, comical codenames revealed
It's been a hot minute since the folks at T-Mobile have introduced a new USB WWAN modem, but if the document above is to be believed, that could be changing in short order. As the Jet ages, it looks like a few others -- codenamed Kitty Hawk, Washington and Wayne -- could be swooping in to take things from here. The former is rumored to hit shelves in March, offering HSPA+ speeds of 21Mbps and the ability to solve most of the world's problems. As for Washington? That'll be T-Mob's first USB
Ricoh CX5 reviewed: only marginally better than the CX4
Well, isn't this just cute? If you'll recall, Ricoh's CX4 was found to only be "slightly superior" the CX3 that came before it (and the same with the CX2 / CX3 before that). Fast forward a few months, and it's the same song and dance all over again... but with different model numbers, of course. The fine folks over at Photography Blog recently put the similarly styled CX5 through its paces, and autofocus aside, it's essentially the same camera as the CX4. The lone standout feature on the new
AT&T fires back with latest iPhone ad: simultaneous voice and web more important than you think (video)
We get it AT&T, your iPhone can do voice and data at the same time, and Verizon's can't. Big Red's Test Man proved that calls aren't always doomed to drop on the iPhone, but AT&T's firing right back and saying how you could be doomed in certain social situations, like forgetting to make a dinner reservation on your anniversary. Props for creativity here, but now that both sides have fired a shot across the other's bow, can't we all just get along? Yeah, probably not.AT&T fires

Britain's Last Glass Eye Maker [Video]
There's only one man left in Britain who knows how to make a glass eye. And he does it with such care, such intensity, and such skill, that after watching him work you'll understand why he's a man apart.
Glass eye makers like Jost Haas are a vanishing breed, as more practical and less expensive alternatives come take precedent. But as Ben Todd captures on 16mm film in this short documentary, theirs is a profession as much about service as it is about artisanship—no matter how icky icky

Texas student sends robot to school in his place, can't get it to do his homework
You may have recently seen telepresence robots played for laughs on The Big Bang Theory, but they do also have quite a few practical purposes, and high school student Lyndon Baty from Knox City, Texas is now using one to particularly great effect. He has a weakened immune system that prevents him from actually attending school, so he's using a remotely-controlled Vgo telepresence "robot" that allows him to move from class to class and interact with teachers and other students using nothing
Technocel's $70 PowerPak Duo battery pack doubles up on USB ports, ships April 1st
Technocel's original PowerPak (and Battery Boost) were both among our arsenal of gadgets used at this year's CES, and they proved incredibly useful for juicing up a dead MiFi or smartphone without having to remain tethered to an AC outlet. As you well know, we're pretty big fans of external battery packs, and it seems as if Technocel has addressed the one major gripe we had with the first-generation PowerPak. The Duo is essentially the same kind of gizmo, but with a lot more oomph and double

BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroen partner for future hybrid tech, put that Great War thing behind them
The last century saw no shortage of disputes between the French and the Germans, but in this century everything's going to be totally cool. BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën, the company that quite naturally owns the Peugeot and Citroën marques, have come to form a partnership focused on the creation of advanced hybrid systems. The name for this new partnership? BMW Peugeot Citroën Electrification, quite naturally. The fruit of this holy union will be better battery packs, generators,
Graphene coatings used to repel, attract water, could make Rain-X decidedly obsolete
Graphene looks poised to replace our silicon and our touchscreens, even fix our batteries. Now it's due for something perhaps a little less revolutionary: keep our pants clean. Physicist James Dickerson and a team of researchers at Vanderbilt University have created two ways to apply thin graphene sheets that either make them super-hydrophobic or super-hydrophilic. These alternate arrangements, termed "rug" and "brick," make the water bead up and run off or spread out and form incredibly thin
The Case Of The Identical Rabbit Games [Ethics]
There are two ways to buy a game about a violent rabbit on Apple's Mac store. You could pay the game's creators $ 10 or you could buy the version that is making them angry. That one costs two bucks.
That choice between Lugaru and Lugaru HD is one that the creators of the game never expected Mac users to be able to make. They made Lugaru in 2005, started selling it on Apple's new Mac store just a couple of weeks ago and have no idea who this person is who is selling their game for $ 8 less

Android 3.0 'Honeycomb' can encrypt all your data, needs a full hour's charge
Diving through the Motorola Xoom's sweet, sweet blend of Android 3.0, we found an interesting perk -- there's an "Encrypt Tablet" option buried in the settings page, intended to secure all your personal data with a password or PIN. While a handy Google rep couldn't tell us which cryptographic standards the OS uses, he did tell us the feature is part of Honeycomb as a whole, not a Motorola exclusive, so we're sure to see the option in other business-minded Android slates to come. Oh, and Google

Google responds: Bing recycles search results, and we'd like it to stop
Google accused Microsoft of copying search results this morning, and the company's sticking to its guns: in response to Microsoft's firm denial -- "We do not copy Google's results" -- it's released another tiny batch of evidence to the contrary and a call for Microsoft to discontinue the practice for good. Mind you, Google search engineer Amit Singhal doesn't explicitly call out its competitor for "copying" results -- rather, "recycling" them through a clever combination of Microsoft Internet
The Geek's Guide to Rebooting Your Kitchen [Video]
Making your kitchen more efficient isn't that different from hacking your workday—decide what you actually do, and trim the resistance to doing it. Here's how you can upgrade your kitchen with a pen, a few hours, and fairly cheap upgrades.
To be honest, the heart of my own kitchen's recent reboot was not cheap—it was a total gut and remodel, with contractors and drywall and all that fun stuff. Putting the root-level changes aside, it was also a chance to empty out our cabinets and

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10's multitouch update rolling out now; X8, X10 Mini, and X10 Mini Pro getting ANT+ support soon
That pinch-to-zoom update for the Xperia X10 that Japanese customers got an early lead on is now rolling out around the globe according to a new blog post from the boys and girls at Sony Ericsson. That may not be the most interesting part, though: they're also chatting up a future firmware update that'll enable ANT+ support on the Xperia X8, X10 Mini, and X10 Mini Pro, a capability baked into the chipsets on those devices that Sony Ericsson hadn't previously exploited. Theoretically, that means
